From offices throughout the country, Ramboll in the UK provides services and expertise in all areas of building engineering, infrastructure, geotechnics, transport and urban planning, environmental services, renewable energy installation design and oil & gas infrastructure.
An holistic philosophy underpins Ramboll's work — holistic leadership and transparent reporting supported by a drive for long term sustainable development. Together with our clients, we work towards not only better engineering solutions for individual projects but ones that benefit the community as well.
Our history
The UK practice was established in 1983 as Whitby & Bird — later known as whitbybird — and since that time we have evolved an engineering culture that sets industry standards and won numerous awards for engineering, design and technical innovation. In 2007, we joined forces with leading knowledge-based company Ramboll, which was founded in Denmark in 1945. The whole group has around 200 offices worldwide, making it possible to to deliver services in any location required. As Ramboll in the UK, we offer a considerably wider range of services and access to a larger knowledge network and talent pool.
Our approach
Ramboll has a reputation for energy, inventiveness and practicality. In whatever we do, our approach is characterised by resourcefulness and imagination, backed up by breadth of knowledge and passion. We take a consistent approach to quality — placing value on detail as well as overall concept — but are also willing to challenge assumptions in the interests of refining design and construction processes.
One of our particular strengths is the contribution we can make at the concept design stage of a project. Establishing the engineering logic early on can help a project meet not only a client's value, performance and programme targets but also energy use and emission targets too. Sustainability is always part of project success criteria. In the UK we have lead the way in the integration of design and construction and continue to contribute to the industry through research and development. Many of our engineers are recognised experts in their fields, regularly contributing to publications and conferences.
We have an excellent track record in the training of our staff and aim to support the development of each individual to their full potential. Over the last four years the practice has ranked in the UK's Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For — rated 31st in the 2009 list — confirming the practice as an outstanding place of employment.
Our reputation for innovation is well established and we received recognition for this aspect of our approach in 2006 when
we were awarded the Queen's Award for Enterprise: Innovation for that year.
