Concrete Society Awards – Outright Winner
Project: Queensferry Crossing
Judges recognised the Queensferry Crossing as the outstanding nomination due to its technical achievements in the use of concrete, its demanding placement conditions and its innovative structural solutions and shear elegance in design. They also described this elegant bridge as 'a fine example of creative concrete technology for place-ability, strength, durability and surface finish quality'. More here...

Project: Bermondsey Dive Under, London
The project team from Network Rail, Ramboll, and Skanska were presented the CEEQUAL Excellent Whole Team Award of 96.6% having increased biodiversity in the area by 113%. The score is the highest that has been achieved to date by a completed project on the Thameslink Programme

Ground Engineering Awards 2017 - Winner logoGround Engineering Awards - Sustainability Award
Project: Bermondsey Dive Under, London
The judges were impressed by a detailed and quantified demonstration of sustainability benefits that were achieved with significant innovations, including: cost reduction from reduced piling and pile depth, reduced material movement and impact. They said it was clear that the team took great pride in meeting and exceeding the sustainability objectives set, and that sustainability was at the core of the project throughout, from inception to completion.

Project: Bermondsey Dive Under, London Bridge, London
Ramboll and Skanska were appointed to undertake the outline design, detailed design and implementation of the strengthening works to existing structures and to design the Bermondsey Dive Under. The new structures include earth embankments, reinforced earth, pre-cast arch viaducts, steel composite bridge structures, concrete box structures and reinforced concrete integral bridges.

Project: Estée Lauder, Fitzroy Place, London
Estée Lauder undertook a refit of its new headquarters to reflect the company’s ethos, changing the internal design and layout. Designed by MCM Architecture, the main alteration included a dedicated entrance from the ground floor to the training facilities via a new grand staircase. Ramboll were appointed to carry out engineering consultancy services for the staircase, assist with the feasibility report for the internal redesign and provide acoustic services.

Project: The Whitworth, Manchester
Ramboll provided structural engineering services on the impressive £15m reinvention of The Whitworth Museum. The redeveloped and completed museum has redefined the way that it engages with its public, connecting the building and surrounding park to create a space with a strong sense of openness and invitation.

Project: Southampton University Boldrewood Campus, Phase 1

Uniting the University of Southampton and Lloyd’s Register in a unique collaboration focusing on marine engineering and engineering sciences, the major new campus development is set on the university's 4.3 hectare Boldrewood site within an established arboretum. A new public facing quad at the centre of the campus creates an additional piece of significant public realm.

Project: Fitzroy Place, London
Surrounded by Soho, Mayfair, Marylebone and Regents Park, the mixed use scheme encompasses some of the most desirable residences and commercial premises in London. Created around a new publicly accessible square, the public realm is also home to the restored Grade II* listed Fitzrovia Chapel. Fitzroy Place is the first major new square in Central London for more than 100 years.

Project: The Portland Collection, Nottingham
Ramboll provided acoustic services for the new home of the Portland Collection, one of the finest accumulations of paintings, sculpture, books, tapestries and furniture in private hands in the UK. The new gallery is housed within the old walls of the Tan Gallop, a redundant structure, which was previously used for training racehorses.

Project: Hastings Pier, East Sussex
Following decades of abuse the much loved Victorian pleasure pier at Hastings has risen like a phoenix thanks to a group of local people and funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Ramboll played a key role in the restoration and regeneration of Hastings Pier, offering strategic advice to both the Pier Trust and Hastings Borough Council.

Project: British Museum World Conservation and Exhibitions Centre, London
Consisting of five vertically linked pavilions, one of which is located entirely underground, the new building houses a new exhibition gallery, laboratories and conservation studios, storage, and facilities to support the Museum’s logistical requirements and growing collections. Extremely complicated spatial challenges, technical requirements, and engineering technologies resulted in Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners and Ramboll working in partnership to coordinate the brief and design for the 18,000 m2 purpose-built facility.

Project: Tate Modern, London, UK
The ground breaking Tate Modern extension pushes the boundaries of modern design and engineering. From its one-of-a-kind geometric structure to its striking brick façade, every facet of this building has been planned and engineered with staggering accuracy. The extension to the world’s most visited museum of modern art increases display space by 60% and includes a whole floor dedicated to educational facilities and outreach programs; as well as staff and public cafes, an events space and a viewing deck.

Project: Bolton Market Place Shopping Centre,
The original shopping centre consisted of two adjoining buildings, a listed market hall and a large 1980’s extension. The £16m project involved the redevelopment of the listed basement vaults into restaurant and retail spaces, the creation of a 9 screen cinema on top of the 1980’s building and a new The vertical transportation circulation strategy. The centre remained operational throughout the redevelopment.

Project: Milford-on-Sea Beach Huts
When most of the old privately-owned concrete huts were destroyed by violent waves and high winds, New Forest District Council (NFDC) decided to make the best of the unexpected opportunity to improve Milford’s seafront for everyone by including improvements to the seafront in the replacement scheme. A major part of the design has been the enhancement of the overall waterfront through new promenades, access bridges and ramps. Judges said the project used all of galvanized metal’s best properties – tough to the salt of the sea, reflective of the big blue skies, and aesthetically pleasing qualities.

S-Lab Awards for Excellence in Laboratory Design, Management and Operation - Sustainable Science Building
Project: Centre for Medicine, University of Leicester
The University of Leicester’s new £42m Centre for Medicine is the UK’s largest Passivhaus building.  The ambition for the Centre for Medicine was to deliver a sustainable building that minimises the energy demand for space heating and cooling, whilst also creating excellent indoor comfort levels. Adopting a Passivhaus (fabric first) design approach allowed the project team to deliver an exceptionally energy efficient building, primarily by minimising energy losses through the building fabric.

Project: 101 Embankment, Manchester
Embankment is the initial phase of a much larger regeneration project to an area that has been neglected for many years and is arranged on a number of levels within a Grade II listed sandstone façade wall. The old masonry arch structure was demolished to make room for a state of the art steel frame which provides three stories of car parking, restrains the listed façade and is the base for two modern steel and glass office buildings above, 101 (complete) and 102 Embankment.

Project: Blackdale Residences, University of East Anglia
The University of East Anglia’s Blackdale development has created 514 en-suite student accommodation rooms with 48 kitchens and was completed from scheme to completion in an incredibly fast 62 weeks. Cross laminated timber (CLT) construction was key in realising this fast paced programme and helping to achieve a BREEAM Excellent project. Two main buildings, Barton House and Hickling House, almost mirror one another with a central courtyard housing a café and laundrette.

Project: Custom House, London
Custom House station is one of the 10 new stations being delivered for the Elizabeth line and will open in December 2018 when services begin in central London. Working with Laing O’Rourke as their lead consultant, Ramboll led completion of the contractor’s design at Custom House. The novel concept of using an exposed precast concrete structural frame solution was developed using Design for Manufacture and Assembly principles to improve buildability of the station frame.

Project: Bermondsey Dive Under, London
Bermondsey Dive Under is a key component of the final stage of the Thameslink project to rebuild London Bridge station. The dive-under involves the design of a new grade separated junction at Bermondsey to minimise conflicting crossings on the eastern approach to London Bridge Station. This will be formed by a series of new structures constructed along the line of existing operational railway viaducts. Wherever possible, existing structures are being reused to reduce disruption and waste.
