Des Mairs

Des Mairs joined the practice in November 1989 and was appointed Partner in 1998, Director in 2000 and Director with joint responsibility for Oil & Gas In 2009.

Des has over thirty years’ experience in the delivery of precision structures that operate under highly demanding conditions. He started his career in aeronautical engineering and then worked on the design of a generation of bridges. At this point, the revolution in bridge design in which aesthetic criteria were becoming newly important, imposed fresh demands on engineers. Des and his team won many competitive commissions through their consistently innovative approach and rigorous design skills.

Des now brings his experience to the delivery of engineering services to offshore industries. He has
a particular expertise in the design of offshore wind installations, meeting the challenges of their hostile environment. Each monopile-supported structure requires precision analysis for a twenty-five year life in which it will undergo millions of loading cycles from waves and wind. Foundation design is critical and Ramboll programs provide the means to design each foundation separately. The team’s current projects include the Thanet offshore installation  (100 turbines) and a new contract to design 92 turbines off the north Wales coast.

Des has built a reputation in the design and delivery of structures that challenge contemporary standards. He is also noted for his care of clients and their investment. He has extensive experience of human resources management and has reported on HR at board level. Skilled in team building and team leadership, he is currently enlarging the UK oil & gas and offshore wind team and planning for extensive growth.
