While the collapse of Carillion and the Grenfell Tower disaster had further harmed perceptions of the industry and knocked confidence that it had the wherewithal to reform itself, Mathew re-affirmed his belief that the industry could be revived by the adoption of innovative design and construction techniques. 

However, “we will need to nurture an environment for success, not one predicated on the consequences of high-profile failures”. Identifying closer collaboration and an evidence based approach as necessary drivers of change within the industry, Mathew calls for a move away from the “Russian Roulette” approach prevalent in public procurement culture as key to unlocking value within the sector.  “We must come together to create an environment for success through constructive engagement, encourage innovation and accelerate the deployment of digital design and offsite construction”.
