Our experts have published many technical papers on assessment of historic structures, and contributed to significant industry reports and international standards.

  • Concrete and post-tensioned concrete bridges - We’ve carried out 95 post-tensioned concrete bridge special investigations since 1971.
  • Metal bridges - We pioneered the realistic assessment of structures and assessed 100s of historic metal bridges including steel and cast and wrought iron and many half through girder bridges
  • Masonry bridges - Since 1998 we have developed arch standards for Network Rail and provided specialist investigations of masonry structures
  • Technology for bridge assessment - In 1990 we started using failure mode effect analysis as an alternative to traditional assessment methods, leading to engineering simulation and 3D computational design

Hammersmith Flyover - Phase 2 refurbishment and strengthening (HFO2)

Phase 2 strengthening of the Hammersmith Flyover (HFO2), was a phenomenally complex £100m programme including innovative engineering solutions to install a full new prestress without removing the original. With 70,000 users every day on a key strategic route into London, the structure, which had been deteriorating due to significant corrosion, presented many technical, logistical, programme and political challenges.

Thought to contain the oldest wrought iron chain links in the world, this bridge project has transformed a derelict and unsafe site into a safe, functional structure that is a major tourist attraction.

Arnside Viaduct deck and rail replacement

Arnside Viaduct deck and rail replacement

Built in 1856 — and rebuilt in 1915 — the 51-span Arnside Viaduct carries the Carnforth to Whitehaven railway over the River Kent estuary at a point close to Morecambe Bay. Its deck had suffered considerable deterioration and Network Rail decided to replace it. Our transport engineers undertook a Grip Stage 5 (Form B) design for the superstructure, working closely with contractor May Gurney.

Brighton Pier boat deck replacement

Brighton Pier, on the south coast, has undergone numerous alterations since it first opened in 1899. The Grade II* listed structure is 540m long and consists of a stem and head that date from three distinct periods. The 1930s ‘boat deck’ — an area approximately 35m x 15m in size — was found to be in poor condition. Our marine structural and geotechnical engineers were employed to design a sympathetic replacement scheme.

Awkward access and a lack of accurate records made it difficult to identify the boat deck’s composition. Modern laser scanning techniques helped determine the existing geometry. The central core of the pier is its grid of Victorian-era cast iron screw piles. In the mid 1990s the pier head had been extended and the new structure surrounded the original. Adding to ...
