Ramboll is leading the way in defining and implementing the concept of sustainable tunnelling. To deliver sustainability in tunnelling design, we seek to apply an holistic approach that balances the economic, environmental and social aspects of schemes. Our aim is to incorporate appropriate and site-specific sustainable elements within each project.
Sustainability can have many definitions. Tunnels are intrinsically sustainable structures in that they tend to have longer operational lives than surface structures, like bridges, and they have less impact upon the above ground environment.
Our tunnel designs are part of the sustainable solutions to the challenges of modern life, such as providing clean hydroelectric power or building metro systems for mass urban transport.
Ramboll calculates the carbon footprints of its major projects, including Fehmarnbelt and Nordhavnsvej, so that everyone involved can see what impact the work is having on the surrounding environment.
